Tormey Woods grew up with the stage being where he is most comfortable, having taken acting classes and performed in plays his whole life. He has worked with the Young Artist Program of the National Opera of Montpellier since 2014, where he regularly performs in professional opera productions, most recently as Dr.Falke in Strauss’ “Die Flerdermaus”. Tormey has sung under the baton of esteemed conductors such as Sir. Simon Rattle, Ennio Morricone and Simon Halsey.
Tormey’s solo performances include the roles of Dr. Falke in "Die Fledermaus" (l'Opera Orchestra National de Montpellier, OONM), Sirocco in "l'Etoile" (Opera Grand Avignon), Grabuge in "Genevieve de Brabant" (OONM), one of the sixteen Sacrificed in Jonathan Dove's "Le Monstre du Labyrinthe" at the Aix-En-Provence Festival, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle (Grand Theatre d'Aix), and The Bench in his first opera, "l'Enfant et les Sortilege" (OONM). All of the operas were fully staged and orchestrated. In March 2019, Tormey will once again be performing with the OONM in the role of The King in Respighi's "La Bella dormente nel Bosco".
Tormey also played the main role, Giovanni Batista Balderone, in the original theatre/musical play "D'ici on voit la mer ou Dieu chantait" by Beatrix Tarquini, at the Grand Avignon Auditorium. In July 2018, Tormey was invited to Sophie Pondjiclis' vocal masterclass and performed Papageno and Papagena's duet as well as a melody from Ravel's "Don Quichotte" at the masterclass concert.
In the ARTE Regards series, ARTE filmed a short documentary about Home-Schooling in which they followed Tormey’s family as well as another family from Germany for three days, documenting their schedules and activities. During the short documentary, ARTE accompanied Tormey to his vocal class at the Conservatoire of Music and Drama of Avignon, where he sang some Puccini and talked about his plans and ambitions for the future. Tormey was also a guest on the radio show France Culture, in the context of the Festival Radio France. During this podcast, Tormey and two fellow members of Opera Junior speak about what it’s like to sing on the opera stage and how classical music impacted their lives.
Tormey is currently studying Singing, Piano and Orchestra Direction at the Avignon Conservatoire of Music and Drama and in September 2019 will be beginning his BMus in Vocal Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Tormey is under the tutelage of Beatrix Tarquini and Nicolas Rivenq at the Conservatoire of Avignon and Opera Junior young artist program respectively.
